“If I could wave a magic wand and have any job in the whole world, I’d be an orthodontist.”

Renée C. Pompei, DDS started her working life after college as an information technology and strategy consultant for a global management consulting firm.  For five years, she enjoyed traveling around the country, helping project teams develop customized computer software solutions.  However, it was not quite the work that stirred passion and excitement in her heart.  While Dr. Pompei was busy being a consulting road warrior, she got braces because she had always wanted to improve her smile.  This orthodontic experience made her realize her true calling.

Although it was quite a challenge to completely change careers and start dental school in her late 20s, she felt there was just no other way.  Now, seven years of post-undergraduate education and seven years of private practice later, she knows she made the right choice because she loves waking up every morning and watching her patients grow to love their new smiles.  Dr. Pompei is fastidious and exacting in her practice, striving each day to become a better orthodontist than she was the day before.

Fun Facts:  Dr. Pompei loves, loves, loves living in New York City!  It is a constant source of creative energy, inspiration to hustle, discovery, and diversity.  When she’s not sleeping, eating, and breathing orthodontics (because she loves it so much), she is spending time with her family and friends, running in Central Park, roaming around the Met or the Whitney, riding her bike down the Hudson River Greenway, reading in a neighborhood café, or enjoying the endless supply of live music, comedy, or theater the city has to offer.

Dr. Pompei is an ABO Board Certified Orthodontist. The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) was founded in 1929 and is the oldest specialty board in dentistry. The ABO’s aim is to elevate the standards of the practice of orthodontia, to familiarize the public with its aim and ideals, and to protect the public against irresponsible and unqualified practitioners.

The Board upholds four main objectives supported by its mission:

  • To evaluate the knowledge and clinical skills of graduates of accredited orthodontic programs by conducting exams and conferring time-limited certificates
  • To re-evaluate clinical knowledge and skills through administration of re-certification exams throughout a Diplomate’s career
  • To support the development of quality graduate, postgraduate, and continuing education programs in orthodontics
  • To promote and encourage certification expertise throughout the world

To become board certified, an orthodontist has to pass a rigorous set of written and clinical examinations, as well as a comprehensive review of his or her credentials.  Once certified, the orthodontist must become re-certified every ten years to maintain board-certified status. Becoming board certified is a symbol of the orthodontist’s pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence in orthodontics.
